It is clear that biofilms represent an important challenge in the treatment of infectious diseases. Biofilm are involved in more than 60% of infections, typically associated with chronic, recurring and device-related infections. Furthermore, we now know that that existing antimicrobials have been selected for efficacy against planktonic organisms and are often much less effective against biofilms. What is clearly needed is a paradigm shift for the selection and development of antimicrobials, which will ensure efficacy against biofilms.
